Popular artwork - The Traffic Light Tree
Day 6 of my photography/ walking on the Isle of Dogs challenge.
Yesterday I headed out as it was getting dark. I’m so drawn to night photos, which can be tricky because they’re not always easy. Today’s images prove this to me, as if I didn’t know already. Still I managed to capture and edit three shots I’m happy with.
The first is the Traffic Light Tree, by french sculptor Pierre Vivant. It stands close to the entrance to Billingsgate Market and is really popular. I had to wait while two sets of people took photos. The first was a group of girls taking selfies. The second was a guy who drove his car onto the small roundabout so that the car, himself and the traffic light sculpture were all in shot. And then joining me on the spot I was standing on was another girl who was taking selfies of herself with the Billingsgate Market sign in the background. Popular place! So come along and be prepared to be patient obviously!
The second is a view of houseboats with lights in Blackwall Basin. And the third is of more artwork, Neon Tree and Light Benches in Canada Square.
The walk along Trafalgar Way is interesting because it has West India Dock and Billingsgate Market on one side and Blackwall Basin and its houseboats on the other. As always, I’ve included the map of where I walked, see the foot of this blog post.
It started to rain shortly into my walk last night but I wasn’t too fussed about my camera since it was a shower rather than pouring rain. I was caught up in the moment and forgot about something I should have been paying attention to - raindrops on the lens! Quite a few shots were useless because of that but luckily in this instance I had plenty of duplicates anyway. Still, a valuable lesson for another time when I might not be able to repeat the shot.
It struck me afterwards that there are two art trees in these shots today, both very different. Yet if I had to choose a favourite I’d be hard pressed. Both are interesting and beautiful and both fit perfectly into their surroundings which are very different.
I post regularly on facebook and Instagram which you can access by clicking here and here.
