Night photography moods
Today’s featured image is in complete contrast to yesterday’s but was captured on the same night. Where yesterday’s scene was full of bright lights and movement, this one is still and dark. Looking through an avenue of lit trees we see a cosy looking restaurant. It might be inviting us in and it would have enhanced the photo to see a couple inside, sharing an intimate conversation and a glass of wine. But this is during lockdown so that’s forbidden.
What I like in this is that it’s smudgy and indistinct. You can’t quite tell where the reflections start and end. It’s an atmosphere that’s a little bit mystical and magical and the blue pools of light under the trees are in one of my favourite colours. It feels romantic to me and if it was a print I see it at home in a bedroom.
This is a little darker than my usual photography but I’m very lucky to be able to spend a lot of time experimenting at the moment. It feels like a real luxury! It offsets in a small way the genuine loss of not being able to see and meet family and friends. Still, I realise that I’m in a very lucky position right now and that the most important thing is for as many of us to stay healthy wherever possible.
Do you have work or a hobby you can get completely engrossed in and that’s getting you through lockdown and restrictions? I’ve spent some time this morning playing around with the photography options on my phone. I don’t always have my camera with me and it’s good to know all the features available to me. If you haven’t checked out the photography and video functions on your own phone, try it, you might be surprised at how many choices are available.
I’ll leave you with a mock up of this photo as a print. Let me know what you think!
Stay safe and well!
