Day 4 of Isle of Dogs photography/walking challenge
Yesterday I went out twice. The first was in the morning to Canary Wharf station to see the poppy signs in the station to mark Remembrance Day. The second was later in the day at dusk to an area on the river close to Millwall Dock (see the attached map). The most striking thing about this area is Millwall Slipway which once joined the docks to the river but is now closed off by a road. And the most striking things about the slipway are the open space, with views to Greenland Pier on the other side of the river, and a chunky and intriguing piece of preserved machinery which I’ve since found out is the mechanism for the old lock gate.
I’m going to include four photos today. One is the view across the river to Surrey Quays, two is a view of the slipway at low tide looking across the river, three is a part of the lock mechanism and four is looking across the river towards Greenland Dock with the Shard and the City in the distance.
The odd thing about yesterday was that I had to walk in and out a bit to cover the river walkway. The path by the river led to a brick wall, where I could see around it to the path continuing on the other side. I had to walk around by the road to get to the next part and after walking a little way again, there was a high fence, again with the path continuing underneath it! So there was a little bit of weaving and backtracking to walk around this area. On my map (below) I’ve marked the wall and fence with red cross markers in approximately the spots where they are. Away from the river, it was all residential, with a mix of old and new housing.
I was struck by the thought that it would be so good to be able to walk all around the Isle of Dogs by the river path (for residents and visitors) and I wonder as I go on with this project how much I’ll be able to do that and how much is actually blocked off.
Since I covered two sets of photos in one day yesterday it now means that, from now on, I can write about the previous day which gives me a lot more leeway in terms of taking photos at whatever time of day I like and then writing this blog the next day.
